The beauty of buckwheat flower in Ha Giang

From late October to the end of November is the season of blooming buckwheat flower, the typical flower of the highland region in Vietnam.

The picturesque fields of buckwheat flower spread all over Dong Van Karst Plateau (Ha Giang province). The flowers’ petals are tiny and gather round the central part, forming cone shape, holding a triangular seed inside.

Indigenous people often use buckwheat flour to make cakes or use grains mixed with corn kernels to produce a kind of liquor which has special taste. In some places, people also use buckwheat seeds as the feed for livestock. However, for buckwheat’s lower yields compared to maize and rice, the area for planting buckwheat is not much expanded.

The local people usually tell a story about the origin of this flower. They say since ancient times, the fairies poured rice and corn’s palea down to Earth, into a canyon. The palea then turned into the seeds of a new kind of plant which saved people from starvation when they ran out of rice and corn.

Buckwheat is the typical flower of the northern mountainous area, but only in Ha Giang is it grown in abundance with the most beautiful scenery.

The People’s Committee of Ha Giang has decided to build a strategy on developing the area of planting buckwheat flower – special tourism product of the province. Accordingly, buckwheat will be grown in a more organized way, focusing more in the areas of tourism highlight such as Lung Cu Flag Tower’s surrounding area, central of Dong Van Town, Vuong Family Relic Area, Pho Bang Town, Sung La Valley, Pho Cao District, Ma Phi Leng Pass’s surrounding area,etc.

Especially, Buckwheat Flower Festival was first held from November 12^th to November 15^th, 2015 as an official confirmation of the new brand named “Ha Giang Buckwheat flower”.

Blooming buckwheat flowers are in their most beautiful period of time, appealing visitors to come in Si Ma Cai district, Lao Cai.

The most beautiful buckwheat area is at Lu Than commune, 13 kilometers from Bac Ha town and about 80 kilometers from Lao Cai city.

At Lu Than, the people’s committee targets at promoting tourism, taking advantage of buchwheat flower; from which local people may increase their incomes. For enormous fields of buckwheat flower, this place is attracting more and more domestic and international visitors.

Light pink flowers are waving in the winds between the majestic karst plateau, having been creating irresistible attraction to the young in recent years.
