Lung Cu flag tower, the northernmost point of Vietnam

Located in Dong Van district of Ha Giang province, Lung Cu Flag Tower is 30 meters tall and lies on the summit of Lung Cu Peak (over 1,400 meters above sea level). On top of the tower hung a large Vietnamese flag which marks Vietnam's territorial sovereignty.

Lung Cu is the northernmost point of Vietnam and Lung Cu Flag Tower was built as a signal to mark Vietnam’s territory. To reach Lung Cu Flag Tower, visitors have to go over 389 stone steps, then continue to climb up 140 steps of a spiral stair inside the flag tower to touch the peak of it. 

According to the historical records, in the time of Ly Dynasty (10^th century) the octagonal monument was first built of more-than-10-meter cunninghamia. In 1887, the flag tower was rebuilt and expanded to a larger size. Through the history and times of reconstructions and restoration, Lung Cu Flag Tower is now 33.15 meters in height and 3.8 meters in diameter.

The base of the tower is carved with the patterns of Dong Son drums – a symbol of Vietnamese culture, and images of the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam. At the top of the tower hung a 54-square-meter flag, symbolizing Vietnam’s ethnic groups. From there, visitors can admire the spectacular natural scenery of Dong Van karst plateau, terraced rice fields and Lo Lo (name of an ethnic group) village lying beside the rice fields.

Under the foot of Lung Cu Flag Tower, Nho Que river meanders around the Ma Pi Leng pass, one of the four highest passes in Vietnam.

Apart from Lung Cu Flag Tower, visitors can also explore many other famous tourist attractions in Ha Giang province such as Quan Ba Heaven Gate – the first gate leading to Dong Van karst plateau; Lung Cam Culture Village -which is well-known for buckwheat flower fields, Vuong Family’s Residence, Dong Van Market- where visitors can witness the cultural quintessences of ethnic groups in the karst pleteau, craggy Ma Pi Leng pass and Nho Que river winding around the foot of the pass.
