Ranges of spectacular mountains, beautiful and mysterious cave systems like Chuột (Mouse) Cave, home of Kong, Tú Làn Cave have become perfect background for the intense confrontations in the blockbuster.

Never before had Quảng Bình – a Vietnam’s central province - become as internationally well-known as now since it was chosen by director Jordan Vogt-Roberts to be the location for the shooting of major scenes of his Hollywood movie “Kong: Skull Island”.  

This has been an excellent opportunity for Quảng Bình to advertise its images widely abroad through the popularity of the movie.      

Amazing filming location of Kong: Skull Island. Ranges of spectacular mountains, beautiful and mysterious cave systems like Chuột Cave, home of Kong, Tú Làn Cave have become perfect background for the intense confrontations in the blockbuster.

Kong: Skull Island had been shot in Vietnam since February, 2016. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and the film crew selected the background really carefully to create a brand new and different atmosphere for the potential blocbuster about King Kong: the background was not CGI as you usually see behind the scenes of various famous movies (Xmen, Apocalypse, Civil War,etc.), it was real with all the grandeur and pristineness!   

In the interview with Channel NewsAsia, the director said: “The look of Vietnam is gorgeous and otherworldly at the same time,” and “There’s such a raw, powerful and unspoiled beauty that general audiences hadn't experienced on screen before. There’s a ruggedness and a beauty to a place like Vietnam.” (according to Channel Newsasia).

The whole film crew was amazed by the unspoiled beauty and the cave system with unique structures in Quang Binh. This is a photo of Tien Cave (Hang Tien) with oddly-shaped stalactites.

In addition to the gorgeous landscapes, the friendliness and hospitality of the local people also impressed the film crew.

The film crew conducted the shooting in Minh Hóa district, Quảng Bình province and to be specific, in three locations: Chà Nòi valley (Đá Đẽo pass, Thượng Hóa village), Yên Phú lake (Trung Hóa village) and areas surrounding rivers and streams and Chuột cave (Tân Hóa village).

Tourtists when coming to Quảng Bình will have chances to explore the cave systems of Tú Làn, Sơn Đoòng (might be the world’s largest subterranean cavern located in Phong Nha - Kẻ Bàng National Park of Vietnam), and join new and exciting entertainment activities such as zipline at Chày river – Dark Cave (Hang Tối).

Tú Làn cave system is located in Tân Hóa village, Minh Hóa district, and 70 kilometers northwest of Phong Nha - Kẻ Bàng National Park. This system consists of many smaller caves such as Song cave, Ươi cave, Chuột cave, Ken cave, Tổ Mộ cave and large valleys. It is still pristine so the paths are rugged and craggy, which is ideal for those who are looking for adventures and love discovering. Not only having to climb up slippery rock slopes but tourists also have to swim to explore some caves.   

It is the mystery and the beauty like straight out from a fantasy fiction which has become unique attractions of Tú Làn cave. Besides, tourists can go camping at some destinations, which is a chance to immerse in the nature.     

Promoting tourism in Quảng Bình

Taking advantage of the movie’s influence, Quảng Bình Department of Tourism used some images in the movie to add into the video advertising local tourism and has received positive response. 

According to Quảng Bình Department of Tourism, they will connect some current tours to Tú Làn cave, Thiên Đường (heaven) cave, Phong Nha – Kẻ Bàng cave, Chày river – Dark cave (hang tối) and the shooting locations of the movie Kong: Skull Island in order to create curiousity and excitement in tourists.

Thanks to the spread of Kong: Skull Island, it is promising that Quảng Bình tourism will strongly develop in  near future.

To promote the development of tourism and facilitate the visits of tourists to the shooting locations of the movie Kong: Skull Island, the authority will operate some new flights such as Đồng Hới – Chiang Mai (Thailand); Đồng Hới – Cát Bi – Hải Phòng; in the meantime, increase the frequency of flights to attract more tourists.
